What you need to know about laser hair removal for deeper skin tones
Read this before you book your dermat appointment

Fact: Not all types of laser hair removal are created alike. The world of beauty has been undergoing a renaissance of sorts for the past few years, bringing forth the need for inclusivity across the spectrum. This means that people of diverse skin tones now have a wider range of options from foundation to concealer, and when it comes to laser hair removal, better access to techniques crafted for their skin tone without side effects. If you’ve been considering opting for a long-term solution for hair removal, here’s what Dr Manjot Marwah, an award-winning celebrity dermatologist, hair transplant surgeon and consultant and director at Dr Manjot’s Clinic, wants you to know first:
Q.
For starters, what is laser hair removal?
A.
During laser hair removal, a laser emits a light that is absorbed by the pigment (melanin) in the hair. The light energy is converted to heat, which damages the tube-shaped sacs within the skin (hair follicles) that produce hairs. This damage inhibits or delays future hair growth. However, this requires multiple sittings for permanent reduction.
Q.
Okay, so what is the timeline for laser hair removal?
A.
Whenever we do laser hair removal, it acts on only 10-20% of the hair roots at one time. Hence, we need approximately 6-8 sittings with a gap of 6 weeks on average for giving around 80% reduction. However, if you have hormonal imbalances, then you may require more sittings and hormonal correction too. If you are planning to get body hair removal done, you can look at a gap of 8 weeks since body hair grows slower.
Q.
And what are the results that I can realistically expect?
A.
Laser hair removal is, in reality, just laser hair reduction. It helps in making the hair thinner and fine, thereby decreasing the rate of growth. Hair is never gone permanently.
Q.
So why couldn’t people with darker skin tones access laser hair removal for the longest time?
A.
As per the functioning of a laser for hair removal, the laser beam targets the pigment melanin. Melanin is also present in our skin, hence if someone has dark skin and they get laser hair removal done, the laser can burn your skin, leaving those with darker skin tone with a higher chance of burns. This applies to tanned skin as well.
Q.
Got it! How has this been overcome with modern technology?
A.
As per modern technology, we now have newer lasers with 1064 wavelength. This wavelength goes deeper and affects only the hair follicular melanin and spares the skin melanin, making it safer. We also have multiple wavelength lasers such as triple and quadruple wavelengths that help in decreasing the chances of burns significantly while assuring good results.
Q.
Are there any side effects to be careful about?
A.
Side effects for laser hair removal are minimal if done with the right laser and technique. This is why, it is important to always choose a dermatologist rather than a salon for laser hair removal. If done incorrectly, it can cause severe burns and pigmentation. Mild redness, itching and swelling are normal and acceptable signs of laser hair removal.
Q.
And are there any precautions I can take?
A.
For best results, sun protection is of utmost importance. You need to use an adequate amount of sunscreen before and after the procedure. When making your choice, look for a 1064 long pulse NdYag laser for optimal results.
